WELCOME TO GERST HAUS!

Evansville Indiana German Restaurant and Bar

Gerst Haus is an Evansville Indiana German Restaurant and Bar, and since 1999 it has been an Evansville favorite, providing the best in German food in an authentic beer hall atmosphere. Most importantly, our menu includes a variety of German and American food, as well as signature dishes that  include our fresh wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, and corned beef and cabbage.  Furthermore, we are noted for the “Best” Reuben sandwich in Nashville, where our other Gerst Haus is also located.

At Gerst, we feature giant frozen Fishbowls of our own Gerst Amber beer, as well as 50 draughts and a large selection of imported beers.  Our goal is to provide good food, good drink, and good service, while also priding ourselves on a fun and authentic German atmosphere, and we invite you to come and enjoy a meal with us.

"Simply AMAZING! I'm Polish so I'm always game for European dining. Portions were huge. Plenty of options and sides. Price is not cheap but totally worth it! Apple strudel with ice cream is to die for! Will be back to try more! Totally reminded me of home cooking with a great atmosphere! Our waitress was the bomb too!"

"I visited the Gerst Haus for the first time this past Monday. Enjoyed the atmosphere full of hardwoods and nostalgia. The wiener schnitzel, glazed carrots and German fried potatoes were served promptly and piping hot. The mild rye bread was also delish. What I may have enjoyed most was my fish bowl of Paulaner bier. They had a very jive selection of German geers, Haus beer and some local microbrewery choices. Definitely worth and stop."

"This was my first time dining there as I am from out of town. I went there not knowing what to expect. The food was terrific and the atmosphere was fun. The service was on point and the selection of beer was outstanding. If you want authentic German food... this is the place."

LEARN ABOUT OUR HISTORY.

William H. Gerst was born in 1847, coming from a long line of brewers in the Bavarian region of Germany.  A short time later the National Brewing Company was established, and in 1859 it changed hands several times.  In 1890 Christian Moerlein and William Gerst went into partnership to open the Moerlin-Gerst Brewing Company, until Gerst bought out Moerlin and the brewery became William Gerst Brewing Company in 1893.  The brewery was located on 6th Avenue South here in Nashville, Tennessee.

William Gerst received a Master Brewers Certificate in 1888, and in 1889 was elected the second President of the United States Brewmaster’s Association. Gerst had a passion for horse racing.  In 1910 his horse by the name of Donau won the Kentucky Derby in 2 minutes, 6.5 seconds, and is to this date the only horse owned by a Tennessean to win the derby……….
